Try as you might, you can’t build a healthy lifestyle without addressing diet and nutrition. Whether you’re looking for health, performance, or both, you must consider how you fuel your body.

If you are trying to lose weight, it is essential to focus on optimizing your diet. For weight loss, I believe that diet management is a much higher priority than exercise, although the two do work together synergistically.

Unfortunately, diet is a very thorny issue in today’s world for a number of reasons. Here are just a couple of them.

First, there is so much misinformation and conflicting information about nutrition today. Everywhere you look there’s another “expert” loudly recommending some new diet as the one true diet that will lead you to health and longevity. The media sensationalizes the results of every new diet study, misleading millions of people. Government recommendations are influenced by lobbyists for the food industry. There is so much conflicting dietary information that many people end up mentally paralyzed. You know you’re not eating well, but how can you change if you don’t know what it means to eat better?

Second, most of us do not eat simply to fuel our bodies. We eat to seek taste sensations, to connect with memories, to manage our emotions. Food is so intertwined with cultural heritage, upbringing, and our social experience as modern humans. These factors make it very difficult to change how we eat, even if we believe we need to do so. I understand this and work with clients to optimize diet while remaining cognizant of a client’s cultural, social, and emotional connections to food.

I don’t pretend to have the “one true diet” that will magically cure your ills and drop a pants size overnight. And I’d advise you to be skeptical of anyone who thinks they do. Everyone is different and not everyone reacts the same way to a given diet.
